PUPPET DIRECTOR

Peter Wilson As a puppeteer, writer, director and producer, Peter Wilson has been at the international forefront of puppet artistry for over three decades. Co-founding Melbourne’s acclaimed Handspan Theatre in 1977, Peter was the driving force behind many globally successful productions for the company over the next eighteen years including Secrets, Four Little Girls and Cho Cho San. He further developed his art form with a string of collaborative works with renowned director Nigel Triffitt including The Fall of Singapore, Moby Dick and Momma’s Little Horror Show. From 1993 to 1999, Peter was Artistic Director of Canberra’s Skylark Theatre, creating successful works such as Twinkle, Twinkle Little Fish and The Hobbit. Over the last decade, Peter has applied his artistic vision to major international events in the role of director of the Nature segment of the Sydney 2000 Olympics Opening Ceremony, Director of Puppetry for the 2006 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony, Segment Director of the 2006 Asian Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies in Doha, Artistic Director of the 2007 Malaysian International Arts Festival and Creative Director of the 2009 Colours of Malaysia. While heading the Post Graduate Diploma and Masters in Puppetry which he developed at the Victorian College of the Arts, Peter continued to direct widely acclaimed productions around the world including The Theft of Sita (co-director, puppeteer), A World of Paper (Japan 2003), The Red Tree (Brisbane 2004) and The Dragon Child (Beijing 2008). His most recent work has been in KL, directing Colours of Malaysia.
